Sulfur Studio Website Redesign

Sulfur Studio • 2024 • UX Designer

Sulfur Studios needed a website that was easier to navigate and better showcased local and national artists’ work. The existing site struggled with usability and did not fully support the studio’s mission to engage the community through art and events.

Overview

Redesigning Sulfur Studios’ Website for Clarity and Access

In this project, I redesigned the website to create a seamless, intuitive experience that improves access to exhibitions and services while highlighting the studio’s creative identity. The new design supports event promotion and artist showcases, making it easier for users to explore and engage with the local art community online.

Problem I

Users couldn’t easily navigate the site to explore or purchase art

The website’s disorganized structure made it hard for visitors to find what the studio offers, understand its mission, or confidently purchase artworks. Users felt lost and often abandoned browsing before taking action.

Sulfur studio.com

Solution 1: Streamlined navigation to support art, community, and accessibility.

I restructured the site’s navigation by streamlining the dropdown menu, using images, and limiting tab options to align with user expectations while highlighting Sulfur Studios’ core mission. This made it easier for visitors to explore artist work, discover events, and shop confidently, encouraging them to click and engage without confusion.

Problem II

The site’s content felt repetitive and unfocused

Users encountered repeated or unclear information across pages, which diluted the studio’s message and overwhelmed visitors looking to learn about exhibitions, events, and shopping options.

Solution 2: Clean Structure for Confident Browsing

We relocated key sections like Events, Support Programs, and Magazine Submissions from the overcrowded navigation into curated homepage sections. This reduced clutter in the navigation while delivering concise, inviting copy that guides visitors through exhibitions, programs, and opportunities, reinforcing Sulfur Studios’ mission with clarity.

Problem III

The shopping flow felt overwhelming and uninspiring.

Although the checkout steps existed, the shop lacked visual clarity and warmth, making the browsing and purchasing experience feel disconnected from Sulfur Studios’ mission and less inviting for users to explore and support local art.

Previous Shop Flow

Solution 3: Made the shop visually clear and engaging to encourage art discovery.

While keeping the core checkout flow unchanged to respect user expectations, I redesigned the shop’s visual hierarchy and layout to guide visitors seamlessly through browsing and purchasing. By adding clear sections for New Arrivals, Local Artists, and Studio Magazines, I transformed the shop into an inviting space aligned with Sulfur Studios’ mission—encouraging users to discover, appreciate, and confidently support local art.

Problem IIV

The shop lacked subcategories, making browsing overwhelming.

Previously, all products were displayed in a single, unfiltered grid with no categories or filters, forcing visitors to scroll endlessly to find what they needed, leading to frustration and drop-offs during product exploration.

Solution 4: Organized the shop with clear categories and filters.

I introduced product subcategories, featured filters, and a search bar to structure the browsing experience, allowing users to easily find items by type, price, or collection. This made the shop more intuitive, reduced friction, and encouraged confident exploration and purchasing.

Problem V

The website failed to tell the stories behind the art.

Visitors couldn’t discover the artists’ voices or the inspiration behind each piece, making the art feel like generic products rather than unique works tied to a community of local creators.

Sulfur studio.com

Lacks clear artwork details & story for users.

Solution 5(a): Showcased the human stories that bring each artwork to life.

We added a “Meet the Artist” section on product pages, allowing visitors to learn about the artist’s background and creative journey. This gives each artwork context and personality, transforming the shopping experience into a personal, story-driven exploration.

MOUTH-BLOWN GLASS

$229.00

Seemingly defying gravity, the Alfredo Vase in light green glass is a striking piece of work with or without flowers. Its pleasing bulbous shape inspires creativity in flower arranging but looks just as good alone or in a group of other vases.

Designer Alfredo Häberli’s joy in his work is clearly visible. His pieces for Georg Jensen are sculptural and sensuous but always with a sense of humour and a strong character. This quality has earned Häberli a legion of fans worldwide.

The Alfredo vase is made from mouth blown glass.
